A dump zone is a way to relieve excess temperature in an outdoor furnace. Air leaks and other malfunctions can cause a unit to overheat which will make the unit boil over and potentially damage components in the system. To safe guard against this problem you can put an aquastat either on the unit or on the piping of the system to measure the temperature of the water in the unit or the circulating water (the pump must be continuous if the aquastat is not placed directly on the unit). Then you can wire the system so that when the aquastat senses water temperatures of 200 degrees F or greater it will trigger either a fan and/or pump on a forced air retrofit system or the pump on a boiler system to dissipate heat to bring the system back to safer levels.
