Keep in mind when purchasing a brazed plate heat exchanger that not all heat exchangers offered for an outdoor furnace are created equal.
1.) 5"x12" units are the industry standard. When someone calls and says "I want a 50 plate heat exchanger for my install" That type of assumption is made on a 5"x12" heat exchanger. The problem you have is when some sellers are misleading on what size there heat exchanger actually is. For example, they sell a brazed plate heat exchanger but only list the length of the unit. They don't tell you that the unit is only 4" wide (4/5 of the output of a 5" wide unit) and that the 1" ports are so close together that they are very difficult to connect to especially if you plan on using unions to make the heat exchanger servicable. 2.) You will want 1" or 1-1/4" connections for any boiler application so that you don't reduce flow. For example, if you have 1-1/4" main pipe on your indoor boiler but are only running 1" tubing from your outside boiler it is better to use an exchanger with 1-1/4" connections so you don't have to reduce the connection size on the indoor loop.
3.) Be sure the brazed plate heat exchangers you are looking at are UL listed. This standard is recognized worldwide and ensures quality and workmanship.
Please keep this information in mind when shopping for brazed plate heat exchangers.
